In his Philadelphia catalogue he wrote: "This figure, of particularly demonic aspect, can be seen at the far left of the tympanum of "The Gates of Hell". It was dated 1886 in the first two editions of the Musée Rodin catalogue, but in subsequent editions, Grappe revised the dating to 1884 after finding a plaster belonging to a collector by the name of Stenesco, entitled "Condemned Fauness", which was dated 1884. He suggests plausibly that it may date from an even earlier period in the evolution of "The Gates", that is to say, 1882 -1883. A "Kneeling Fauness" was exhibited at the Exposition Monet Rodin in 1889 and is probably to be identified with this figure. Noteworthy is the extreme contrast between the svelte curves of the body and the battered treatment of the facial features". $ 70,000.- |
